| Athens, the capital of Greece, is a large and modern city with approximately 4 million inhabitants. It is situated in the eastern mainland of Greece, extending over a plain and surrounded by three mountains: Pendeli at the northeast, Parnitha at the north and Ymittos at the east.
As far as its history is concerned, Athens was considered to be the intellectual and artistic center of Greece. It is the city where democracy, philosophy, literature, science, art and drama were developed during the 5th century B.C.
Athenians, are not only proud for the city's history, but for their vibrant lifestyle, enthusiasm, hospitality and sociality as well. There are remarkable museums and archeological sites that tourists can visit. Additionally, there are restaurants and taverns with Greek traditional cuisine. The National Technical University of Athens, founded in 1836,consists of nine academic faculties, some related to engineering (e.g. civil, electrical & computer, chemical, mechanical) and some others related to architecture and general sciences. Particularly, the school of Mechanical Engineering includes the section of aircraft-mechanical engineers, and its duration is 5 years.
Concerning aircraft and aerospace engineering, some significant industries are:
* The Hellenic Aerospace Industry S.A (founded in 1975) which specializes in aircraft and engines maintenance, electronics, aero structures manufacturing and other relevant applications
* INASCO Hellas Co. (founded in 1989), which specializes in aeronautics and in advanced materials and manufacturing.
Lastly, it is worth mentioning the Hellenic Vehicle Industry (established in 1972) and the Hellenic Arms Industry (established in 1977).
