Kyiv is an ancient city. It is more than 1,500 years old. From the 9th century Kyiv was the centre of Kyiv Rus, a powerful state with highly developed culture, and it was widely known throughout Europe. By the 1000's, Kyiv was one of Europe's greatest centers of commerce and culture and known as the rival of Constantinople.
Now Kyiv is the capital and largest city of Ukraine, and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The city is also the political, economic, and cultural center of Ukraine. It lies in north-central Ukraine on the Dnieper River, in a rich agricultural and industrial region. There are many places of historical interest in our city (St. Sophia's Cathedral, Kyiv-Pecherska Lavra, St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, St. Andrew's Church, the Golden Gates, Mariinsky Palace)
Kyiv is the home of well-known educationally establishments as Kyiv Polytechnic Instituted, National Aviation University, etc. Such famous rocket designers as Sehiy Korolyov (under his direct guidance new rockets were designed and launched), Volodymyr Cheelomei (headed the creation of the carrier rockets and satellites “Proton”, “Polit”, orbital stations “Salute-3”, “Salute-5”), and others also studied or lived and worked in Kyiv.
